Myocardial MR Strain in professional soccer athletes

Dr Franco and colleagues from Instituto de Cardiología y Medicina Vascular- TEC Salud del Sistema Tecnologico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico studied Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) by MR in a group of 20 high performance athletes versus 17 healthy sedentary subjects using the Medis’ QStrain solution. They found a non-significant trend towards a higher negative deformation percentage in the athletes versus the control group. The athletes had higher systolic as well as diastolic diameters, and also the LV mass and indexed mass were significantly larger in the soccer players. There was no difference in the Ejection Fraction.

They hypothesize that these differences may represent normal and physiologic adaptations, to be confirmed in larger studies.
